All kakis have high water content, and more calories than other fruits. One of components of the kaki that should be highlighted is beta-carotene. This vitamin gives the fruit its colour. Beta-carotene, also known as provitamin A, is converted into vitamin A in our body as it is needed. Vitamin A is essential for vision, skin, hair, mucous membranes, bones and a proper functioning of the immune system. In addition, kaki fruit contains vitamin C, which is involved in the formation of collagen, bones and teeth, red blood cells, and favours the absorption of iron from food and the resistance to infections; and potassium, which is necessary for the generation and transmission of nerve impulses, for normal muscular activity, and is involved in water balance inside and outside the cell. To a lesser extent, the kaki fruit contains certain group B vitamins (B1, B2, and B3) and minerals (calcium, phosphorus, iron and sodium).
Because of its composition, kaki fruit is recommended to everyone, and especially to those with a higher risk of vitamin deficiencies. Kaki reduces the risk of cardiovascular diseases, degenerative diseases and cancer. Also, because of its low-sodium intake, this type of fruit is highly recommended for hypertensive people and for people who suffer from cardiovascular diseases. The kaki fruit has its origin in Asia, where it has been cultivated since the eighth century. Later, it was introduced in Western countries; first in the United States, in the nineteenth century, and afterwards in Spain, France and Italy around 1870.
